MiniDrivers – 2026 British – Mini Race

Silverstone produced an unforgettable Saturday sprint, and once again Kimi Antonelli proved why he leads the championship. The young Mercedes driver delivered a composed and clinical performance to claim his first-ever sprint victory, denying the home crowd the fairytale of a Lewis Hamilton win after an intense 17-lap battle around one of motorsport’s most iconic circuits.

Hamilton had given the British fans plenty to cheer about after securing sprint pole by the slimmest of margins on Friday, and he converted that advantage into the lead at the start. The Ferrari driver defended aggressively into the opening corners, squeezing Antonelli wide while keeping control of the race. However, the Mercedes youngster refused to let the gap grow, remaining firmly within striking distance as he patiently waited for the perfect opportunity to attack.

The decisive moment arrived midway through the sprint. After several laps of relentless pressure, Antonelli used superior pace and clever energy deployment to launch a clean move on Hamilton, taking the lead with a bold overtake that immediately changed the complexion of the race. Once in clean air, the Italian quickly stretched his advantage, proving that Mercedes had the faster package over the 100-kilometre distance.

Behind the leading pair, Lando Norris fought his way to third after another strong McLaren performance. George Russell recovered to fourth after battling through the field, giving Mercedes a double top-four finish, while Charles Leclerc completed the top five for Ferrari. Max Verstappen endured another frustrating sprint, unable to challenge the leaders despite remaining in the fight for valuable points throughout the afternoon.

Further back, the midfield delivered plenty of entertainment with fierce wheel-to-wheel action and several aggressive overtakes. Liam Lawson came under post-race investigation after a robust defensive move against Isack Hadjar, while Arvid Lindblad continued to impress by scoring another point with a mature drive. For the Spanish drivers, however, it was a difficult afternoon, with Carlos Sainz finishing well outside the points and Fernando Alonso’s race unraveling after early contact.

As the chequered flag fell, Antonelli crossed the line to secure not only his maiden sprint victory but also another significant step towards the championship. The success extended his advantage in the standings and reinforced Mercedes’ dominance in 2026. Yet perhaps the biggest statement came from the manner of the victory: beating Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone, in front of a partisan British crowd, is the kind of performance that champions are remembered for.
