Sunday’s race in Barcelona turned into one of the wildest and most dramatic afternoons the championship has seen in years. What began as a tense battle for victory quickly descended into chaos, with two red flags, multiple heavy crashes and constant uncertainty completely reshaping the outcome. In the middle of the madness, Fabio Di Giannantonio kept his composure to claim an emotional victory for VR46 after a race that became more about survival than pure speed.
Pedro Acosta looked untouchable during the opening stages. Starting from pole, the KTM rider controlled the pace confidently while Alex Marquez stayed glued to his rear wheel. But disaster struck on lap 12 when Acosta’s bike suddenly lost power on the back straight. Marquez, with no time to react, slammed violently into the rear of the KTM in a terrifying accident that immediately brought out the red flag. Both riders were taken to hospital conscious, while Di Giannantonio himself was struck by debris from the crash and injured his hand in the incident.
After a lengthy delay, the race restarted — only for more chaos to erupt moments later. Johann Zarco, Francesco Bagnaia and Luca Marini became involved in another frightening Turn 1 crash that triggered a second red flag. At that point, the event had become an endurance test for riders, teams and race control alike, with nerves stretched to the limit across the paddock.
The final restart, reduced to a short sprint distance, finally allowed the remaining riders to settle into a rhythm. Acosta once again charged to the front despite everything that had happened earlier, but tyre issues and relentless pressure began to slow him in the closing laps. Di Giannantonio sensed his opportunity and launched the decisive attack with only two laps remaining, overtaking the KTM rider to secure his first victory in three years. Moments later, Acosta’s race collapsed completely after contact with Ai Ogura on the final lap.
Behind the winner, Joan Mir crossed the line in second with rookie Fermin Aldeguer completing the podium after a sensational ride through the chaos. Francesco Bagnaia recovered to fourth, while Marco Bezzecchi quietly collected valuable championship points in fifth. Jorge Martin, meanwhile, endured another frustrating afternoon after crashing out following contact with Raul Fernandez while fighting near the front.
Despite the celebrations for Di Giannantonio and VR46, the mood at the end of the day remained bittersweet. The race will be remembered less for the final result and more for the frightening accidents that overshadowed the event. Still, the biggest relief for everyone involved was the news that all injured riders were conscious and stable after one of the most dangerous afternoons Barcelona has witnessed in recent years.
