MotoGP – 2026 Catalan GP – Sprint

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya delivered one of the most intense sprint battles in recent memory as Alex Marquez finally conquered his home event in dramatic fashion. After the heartbreak of crashing from the lead at this same track last year, the Gresini rider returned with a perfect response, surviving relentless pressure from Pedro Acosta to claim victory by just 0.041 seconds — the closest sprint finish in MotoGP history.

Pedro Acosta started from pole position and immediately looked ready to dominate. The KTM rider controlled the opening laps with incredible speed, but Alex Marquez stayed glued to his rear wheel, carefully waiting for the right moment to attack. That opportunity arrived at the start of lap four, when Marquez dived into Turn 1 and seized the lead in front of the packed Barcelona crowd.

From there, the race became a tense duel between two of Spain’s brightest stars. Marquez attempted to break away, even opening a small gap midway through the sprint, but Acosta refused to surrender. In the final laps, the KTM closed rapidly, setting up a breathtaking finish in which Marquez had to defend aggressively through every braking zone. Acosta launched late attacks into Turn 5 and Turn 10 on the final lap, but the Ducati rider held firm to cross the line just four hundredths ahead.

Fabio Di Giannantonio completed the podium after a strong comeback ride for VR46 Ducati. The Italian spent most of the sprint battling Raul Fernandez before finally securing third place in the closing stages. Fernandez still impressed with one of Aprilia’s few positive results of the day, especially after a disastrous afternoon for the factory team.

While Marquez celebrated, Jorge Martin endured a nightmare Saturday. The recent Le Mans winner crashed once again after briefly climbing through the field, marking yet another difficult session in an already chaotic weekend for Aprilia. Championship leader Marco Bezzecchi also struggled badly after an earlier qualifying crash, managing to score only a single point in ninth position.

For Alex Marquez, however, this was far more than just another sprint victory. Racing without his injured brother Marc at the circuit where he suffered heartbreak twelve months ago, the Spaniard delivered a performance built on control, bravery and resilience. Barcelona erupted when he crossed the line, and after such a dramatic victory, momentum suddenly feels firmly on his side heading into Sunday’s main race.
