MotoGP – 2026 Italian GP – Race

Mugello erupted on Sunday as Marco Bezzecchi delivered a dream victory on home soil, turning pole position and blistering pace into a triumph that further strengthened his championship lead. In front of thousands of Italian fans, the Aprilia rider bounced back from a disappointing sprint result and produced a controlled, aggressive performance to defeat teammate Jorge Martin in a memorable one-two finish for the Noale manufacturer.

The opening laps were dominated by a fierce battle between Bezzecchi and Francesco Bagnaia. The Ducati rider, determined to win at his home circuit once again, briefly took control and looked capable of ending Aprilia’s dominance. However, Bezzecchi remained calm, carefully managing his tyres while staying within striking distance. His decisive moment arrived on lap 14, when he launched a clean attack to reclaim the lead and immediately began pulling away from the chasing pack.

Once in front, the championship leader never looked back. Jorge Martin emerged as his closest challenger, steadily climbing into second place and trying to reduce the gap in the closing stages. Despite his efforts, the Spaniard could not match Bezzecchi’s rhythm, forcing him to settle for second while still collecting valuable points in the title race. The result allowed Bezzecchi to extend his advantage at the top of the standings to 17 points.

Behind the leading duo, Bagnaia completed the podium after a hard-fought afternoon. The Italian delighted the Mugello crowd with several aggressive moves but ultimately lacked the pace to challenge the Aprilias over race distance. Ai Ogura produced one of the standout rides of the day, charging from 13th on the grid to finish fourth, narrowly missing what would have been a historic all-Aprilia lockout of the top four positions.

Further back, Fabio Di Giannantonio secured fifth place after another solid weekend, while Pedro Acosta won an entertaining battle with the returning Marc Marquez. The six-time premier-class champion showed flashes of speed in only his second race back after surgery, but he was unable to keep pace with the front runners and eventually crossed the line in seventh.

For Bezzecchi, however, the day belonged entirely to him. After setting a record-breaking pole lap on Saturday and responding perfectly to the sprint disappointment, the Italian achieved what he had described earlier in the week as a dream: winning at Mugello in front of his home fans. With Aprilia now firmly established as the benchmark of the championship, the title fight is increasingly revolving around the man carrying the number one plate.
