MiniDrivers – 2026 Canada – Mini Race

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve delivered another chaotic and intense Saturday mini race in Montreal, where strategy, wheel-to-wheel battles and internal team drama combined to shape a dramatic showdown. From the very first lap, it was clear that Mercedes had the outright pace, but the real story would unfold inside their own garage.

George Russell controlled the race from pole position with a strong launch, immediately defending the lead into Turn 1. Behind him, teammate Kimi Antonelli applied relentless pressure, turning the opening laps into a tense intra-team battle that quickly escalated into controversy. On lap six, a bold overtaking attempt from Antonelli nearly resulted in contact, allowing Lando Norris to slip into the fight and capitalise on the confusion.

The defining moment of the sprint came during that fierce Mercedes duel. Antonelli accused Russell of forcing him off track in a defensive move that pushed both drivers to the limit, even taking to the radio in frustration as the situation escalated. The clash cost Antonelli crucial momentum, and although he remained competitive, he was unable to fully recover the lost ground.

Lando Norris seized the opportunity perfectly, staying close to the Mercedes pair and eventually moving into second place as the intra-team fight unsettled both rivals. From there, he managed the gap smartly, avoiding further chaos and securing a valuable podium finish for McLaren in a race defined by instability ahead of him.

Behind the top three, Oscar Piastri brought home fourth place after a solid but quiet race, while Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton followed in fifth and sixth. Max Verstappen finished seventh after struggling to match the pace of the front-running cars, highlighting Red Bull’s current limitations on this circuit.

As the checkered flag fell, Russell crossed the line first to claim another mini race victory, reinforcing his momentum in the championship fight. However, the spotlight remained firmly on the tension within Mercedes, as the clash with Antonelli overshadowed the result and raised fresh questions about team harmony heading into Sunday’s main race.
