MiniDrivers – 2026 United States – Race

Kimi Antonelli delivered a commanding performance at the Circuit of the Americas on Sunday, securing his ninth victory of the 2026 season and taking another giant step towards the world championship. Starting from pole position, the Mercedes sensation controlled the race and crossed the finish line comfortably ahead of Charles Leclerc, with Max Verstappen completing the podium. Antonelli’s triumph extended his championship advantage to 123 points, leaving him tantalisingly close to becoming the youngest world champion in history.

The opening laps immediately produced an intense battle at the front. Antonelli made a clean getaway to retain the lead, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton attacked Verstappen in an attempt to move ahead of the Red Bull driver. Leclerc briefly managed to get past the Dutchman, but Verstappen fought back to reclaim second place. The exchanges allowed Antonelli to begin building an advantage, although the fight behind him ensured that the opening stages were anything but straightforward.

As the race progressed, strategy became the decisive factor. Antonelli and Mercedes committed to a one-stop strategy, prioritising tyre management and consistent lap times over outright aggression. Ferrari and Red Bull opted for two stops, hoping that fresher tyres would allow their drivers to close the gap in the closing stages. However, the Mercedes driver maintained his pace with impressive maturity, gradually extending his advantage while his rivals struggled to make their alternative strategies pay off. By the chequered flag, Antonelli had built a winning margin of approximately 15 seconds over Leclerc.

Leclerc produced an excellent drive to secure second place for Ferrari after an entertaining battle with Verstappen. The Monegasque kept the pressure on the Red Bull driver throughout the race and ultimately emerged as Antonelli’s closest challenger, although he never quite had enough pace to threaten the leader. Verstappen settled for third, securing another valuable podium for Red Bull. Hamilton finished fourth after showing promising speed, while Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris could not find a way into the leading positions.

Further down the field, George Russell endured a frustrating afternoon. The Mercedes driver received a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage, eventually finishing eighth and losing valuable ground to his teammate in the championship standings. Fernando Alonso’s race was also compromised after contact with Alex Albon caused damage to his car, leaving the Aston Martin driver down in sixteenth. Carlos Sainz suffered front-wing damage following contact with Arvid Lindblad at the start and finished eighteenth. Meanwhile, Oliver Bearman and Franco Colapinto were among the drivers who failed to reach the finish.

For Antonelli, the victory represents a potentially defining moment in an extraordinary campaign. His 365 points leave him 123 ahead of Russell, with Lewis Hamilton also remaining mathematically in contention. Although the title was not secured in Austin, the Italian now has a huge opportunity to settle the championship at the next round in Mexico. At just 20 years old, Antonelli continues to combine remarkable speed with the composure of an experienced champion. After another flawless Sunday, the question is no longer whether he can win the title, but when he will finally make history.
