MiniDrivers – 2026 Australia – Qualifying

The new season began with an electrifying qualifying session in Melbourne, where teams and drivers finally revealed their true pace after days of speculation. Under clear skies at Albert Park, the fight for the first pole position of the year quickly turned into a showcase of speed from the silver cars, with George Russell emerging as the man to beat throughout the hour. By the end of the session, the British driver delivered a stunning lap of 1:18.518 to secure the top spot on the grid for Sunday’s race.

From the very beginning, Russell looked in complete control. He topped the opening segment and continued to dominate as the track evolved, consistently setting the benchmark while his rivals struggled to match the pace. When the decisive moments of Q3 arrived, his final attempt proved untouchable, giving him a comfortable margin of almost three tenths over his closest challenger.

Completing a remarkable day for Mercedes, rookie Kimi Antonelli secured second place to lock out the front row for the team. It was an impressive recovery after a dramatic crash earlier in the weekend that nearly jeopardized his participation in qualifying. Despite a small mistake during the final session, the young Italian still managed to produce a strong lap that confirmed the team’s early dominance in this new era of regulations.

Behind the leading duo, the surprise of the session came from Isack Hadjar. The young Red Bull driver delivered a brilliant performance to take third place, beating more experienced names in the field. Charles Leclerc followed in fourth, while local favorite Oscar Piastri secured fifth in front of his home crowd. Meanwhile, reigning champion Lando Norris could only manage sixth, just ahead of Lewis Hamilton.

The most dramatic moment of the session occurred early on when Max Verstappen crashed at the first corner during his opening attempt in Q1. A sudden rear lock-up sent the car spinning into the barriers, eliminating the Dutch driver before he could set a competitive time. The incident triggered a red flag and left one of the championship favorites facing a difficult challenge from the back of the grid on race day.

When the dust finally settled, the message from Melbourne was clear: Mercedes has arrived with a formidable package. With Russell on pole and Antonelli alongside him on the front row, the team has placed itself in the perfect position heading into Sunday’s race, while the rest of the field faces an immediate challenge to close the gap in the opening chapter of the season.
