Lando Norris claimed a sensational victory at the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest, in what turned into an intense intra-team battle and strategic showcase. He edged out his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri by successfully executing a one-stop plan that ultimately paid dividends on a track known for limited overtaking opportunities.
Charles Leclerc, who astonished everyone by securing Ferrari’s first pole of the season after outpacing both McLarens in qualifying, looked strong at the start. He resisted initial pressure to lead the field for much of the early laps. However, the combination of cold tires and strategic miscalculations saw his pace drop off in the closing stages .
In contrast, McLaren split their strategy: Norris opted for a one-stop, while Piastri stayed longer on track before making his pitstop. Norris inherited the lead with fresher rubber in the final stint, allowing him to fend off relentless pressure from Piastri on old tires to take a vital win and close the championship gap.
George Russell drove a composed race to secure third in the Mercedes, capitalizing on Leclerc’s tire fade to make a late pass. Russell moved up into the podium spot, leaving Leclerc to settle for fourth despite his early dominance.
Further down the standings, Fernando Alonso delivered a standout performance in fifth for Aston Martin, while Gabriel Bortoleto of Sauber celebrated a career-best sixth place. Lance Stroll rounded out the points in seventh. Liam Lawson impressed by finishing ahead of former teammate Max Verstappen, who came in ninth after a difficult weekend.
For McLaren, Norris’s win tightens the championship battle, bringing him within nine points of Piastri in their season-long duel. Meanwhile, Leclerc crossed the line just off the podium but remains well-positioned, with Mercedes and Ferrari showing momentum as F1 heads into its summer break.
