Baku once again lived up to its reputation as one of the most unpredictable street circuits on the calendar, but this time George Russell kept complete control from lights to flag. After securing pole position on Friday, the Mercedes driver delivered a composed and clinical performance to claim victory, reducing the gap to championship leader Kimi Antonelli and keeping the title fight alive with another flawless display on the demanding streets of Azerbaijan.
Russell made the perfect start, defending the inside line into Turn 1 before immediately settling into a strong rhythm. Charles Leclerc tried to stay within striking distance during the opening stint, while Max Verstappen remained firmly in contention behind the Ferrari. Antonelli, meanwhile, faced an uphill battle after Friday’s qualifying crash left him starting further down the order, forcing the Italian into another recovery drive.
The race quickly developed into a strategic contest as tyre degradation and the ever-present threat of a Safety Car kept every team on edge. Mercedes executed Russell’s pit stop perfectly, allowing him to retain the net lead despite Ferrari attempting an undercut with Leclerc. Once back in clean air, the Briton steadily rebuilt his advantage, repeatedly setting the fastest laps of the race and denying his rivals any realistic opportunity to attack.
Behind the leader, Leclerc secured second place after another consistent afternoon for Ferrari, while Verstappen completed the podium following an aggressive but controlled drive. Antonelli once again demonstrated why he leads the championship, carving his way through the field with a series of decisive overtakes to finish fourth and limit the damage in the standings. Lando Norris rounded out the top five after McLaren struggled to match the pace of Mercedes over a full race distance.
Further back, Lewis Hamilton recovered valuable points after battling through traffic for much of the afternoon, while Isack Hadjar continued his impressive rookie campaign with another points finish. Several midfield runners were caught out by Baku’s unforgiving walls, triggering brief yellow flags but never quite producing the full Safety Car that many teams had been anticipating throughout the race.
As the chequered flag fell, Russell celebrated one of his most important victories of the season. Converting pole position into maximum points on one of the calendar’s most demanding circuits was the perfect response after Antonelli’s recent run of success. Although the young Italian remains firmly in command of the championship, Russell’s victory ensures the fight continues as the championship heads next to the Asian leg of the season.
