Baku once again proved why it remains one of the most unpredictable street circuits on the calendar, but on Friday it was George Russell who mastered its unique challenge. The Mercedes driver produced a stunning final lap to secure pole position, taking full advantage after championship leader Kimi Antonelli crashed during the decisive stages of qualifying. Russell’s performance marked another crucial moment in Mercedes’ outstanding 2026 campaign and kept his slim title hopes alive heading into Saturday’s race.
Russell had shown impressive speed throughout the weekend. He topped the opening practice session before narrowly missing out on a clean sweep when Max Verstappen edged him in the second session. Even so, Mercedes entered qualifying as the team to beat, with both Russell and Antonelli appearing capable of fighting for pole around the demanding 6.003-kilometre Baku City Circuit.
The decisive moment arrived in Q3. Antonelli, who had looked set to challenge his teammate for the fastest time, clipped the barriers during his final flying lap and brought out yellow flags, ending his session prematurely. Russell immediately capitalised, delivering a flawless lap through Baku’s narrow castle section and along its enormous main straight to secure pole position. Charles Leclerc extracted everything from the Ferrari to qualify second, while Max Verstappen completed the top three after another competitive afternoon.
Behind the leading trio, Lewis Hamilton placed his Ferrari on the second row after another solid qualifying display, while Lando Norris rounded out the top five for McLaren. The margins throughout Q3 remained exceptionally close despite the interruptions, once again underlining how finely balanced the competitive order has become during the second half of the season.
Antonelli’s accident became the major talking point of the session. Although the Italian escaped unhurt, the crash denied the championship leader an opportunity to fight for what would have been another pole position. With overtaking possible but never straightforward in Baku, the incident could have significant implications for the championship battle, especially with Russell eager to reduce the 81-point gap separating the Mercedes teammates.
For Russell, however, Friday belonged entirely to him. Around one of the fastest and most unforgiving street circuits in the world, he combined precision, confidence and perfect timing to deliver a lap worthy of pole position. With Mercedes once again locking out the front of the competitive order and Ferrari lining up alongside, all the ingredients are in place for another unpredictable showdown through the streets of Baku.
