MiniDrivers – 2026 Dutch – Mini Race

The mini race after the summer break delivered exactly the response George Russell had been searching for. The Mercedes driver produced a flawless lights-to-flag performance to claim victory, converting pole position into a commanding win that breathed new life into his championship campaign. It was Russell’s third mini triumph of the 2026 season, achieved with complete control despite late rain threatening to shake up the order.

Russell made the perfect start, immediately defending his lead into Turn One before settling into a relentless rhythm at the front. While Lando Norris initially looked capable of mounting a challenge from second place, the Mercedes driver steadily pulled away during the opening laps, managing both his tyres and the narrow, unforgiving circuit with remarkable precision. By the halfway point, Russell had established enough of a cushion to dictate the pace of the race.

Behind the leader, the battle for the remaining podium positions intensified. Norris held second during the early stages, but Ferrari opted for a different tyre strategy with Charles Leclerc. As the mini race entered its closing laps, the Monegasque’s superior grip allowed him to launch a decisive move past the McLaren, securing second place and leaving Norris to complete the podium after another competitive performance.

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli adopted a more conservative approach throughout the race. The Mercedes youngster remained in contention for much of the afternoon but ultimately settled for fourth place, choosing to minimise risks rather than engage in aggressive battles. Max Verstappen finished sixth after struggling to extract the pace required to fight at the front, while Lewis Hamilton endured a disappointing mini race, crossing the line in seventh and losing valuable ground in the championship standings. Pierre Gasly claimed the final point in eighth after a solid drive for Alpine.

The weather added another layer of uncertainty during the closing stages as light rain began to fall over the circuit. Although the conditions became increasingly slippery, Russell never put a wheel out of place. His calm race management ensured that the changing weather never developed into a genuine threat, allowing him to cross the finish line more than a second clear of Leclerc after one of his most composed performances of the year.

For Russell, the victory represented far more than eight championship points. After an inconsistent first half of the season, the Briton reminded the paddock of his ability to dominate when given the opportunity. While Antonelli continues to hold a comfortable advantage in the standings, Russell’s flawless mini race win provided the perfect boost ahead of Sunday’s main race and sent a clear message that the fight at the front is far from over.
