Lando Norris finally returned to the top step of the podium with a composed and determined drive at the Hungaroring, delivering McLaren’s first victory of the 2026 season. Starting from pole position, the reigning world champion overcame an early setback, changing strategies and late-race pressure to secure a long-awaited triumph. While Max Verstappen finished second and Kimi Antonelli completed the podium, the Mercedes driver still strengthened his championship advantage heading into the summer break.
The opening laps immediately shook up the race. Although Norris launched cleanly from pole, teammate Oscar Piastri made a brilliant start to take the lead, giving McLaren control of the race. The Australian looked set to challenge for victory after building a comfortable advantage, but the team’s hopes of a one-two finish began to unravel when Piastri suffered gearbox problems. A Virtual Safety Car was deployed after he eventually stopped on track, dramatically reshuffling the strategic picture.
Norris inherited the lead and never looked back. McLaren executed the restart perfectly, allowing the Briton to manage the gap despite relentless pressure from Verstappen, who produced another outstanding recovery drive to claim second place. Behind them, Antonelli delivered one of the strongest performances of the afternoon. Starting only seventh after a grid penalty, the championship leader carved his way through the field with a series of decisive overtakes before holding off the Ferraris in the closing laps to secure a valuable third-place finish.
Ferrari endured a frustrating afternoon despite showing competitive pace throughout the weekend. Lewis Hamilton crossed the line in fourth but was handed a post-race penalty that dropped him behind teammate Charles Leclerc, who inherited fourth place. George Russell also recovered after a poor opening lap to finish seventh, while Isack Hadjar continued his impressive rookie campaign with another points finish for Red Bull’s junior team.
Further down the order, Liam Lawson, Nico Hülkenberg and Arvid Lindblad completed the top ten, while Fernando Alonso endured another difficult race outside the points. Piastri’s retirement proved to be one of the defining moments of the afternoon, denying McLaren what had looked like a comfortable one-two finish and opening the door for Verstappen and Antonelli to climb onto the podium.
As the chequered flag fell, Norris celebrated a hugely significant victory that ended both his personal win drought and McLaren’s wait for success this season. It was a performance built on resilience, flawless execution and strong race management after losing the lead early on. Meanwhile, Antonelli’s podium ensured the Mercedes star extended his championship lead to 50 points, leaving the title race firmly in his hands as the championship heads into its summer break.
