MiniDrivers – 2026 Brazil – Qualifying

Lando Norris delivered a sensational performance at Interlagos on Saturday, mastering treacherous wet conditions to claim pole position for the Brazilian round. The McLaren driver produced a stunning lap of 1:27.470, beating George Russell by 0.204 seconds and Kimi Antonelli by 0.625 seconds. It was Norris’s third consecutive pole position at this circuit, confirming his incredible affinity with one of the most unpredictable venues on the calendar.

Qualifying was anything but straightforward. Torrential rain hit Interlagos shortly before the session began, forcing officials to suspend proceedings for more than 80 minutes because of dangerous conditions and severe aquaplaning. The drivers had to wait patiently while the rain gradually eased, but the track remained extremely slippery when the action finally resumed. Full wet tyres were initially required, and even the most experienced drivers struggled to keep their cars under control.

The opening session already produced plenty of drama. Several drivers had frightening moments, while Brazilian rookie Rafael Câmara managed to survive a collision with the barriers before eventually being eliminated in Q2. Oscar Piastri also suffered a disappointing afternoon, failing to reach the final shootout and qualifying twelfth. Max Verstappen, meanwhile, did not participate in Q2 after completing his required running earlier, knowing that his extensive power-unit changes would force him to start near the back regardless.

As conditions continued to deteriorate during the final shootout, Norris delivered when it mattered most. His remarkable lap put him ahead of Russell, who had looked capable of challenging for pole. However, the Mercedes driver was furious with his team after being instructed to back off during his final attempt, believing that he had been denied an opportunity to fight for first place. Antonelli secured third, completing an excellent session for Mercedes and showing once again why he remains such a formidable competitor despite already having secured the world championship.

The provisional qualifying order was subsequently transformed by several penalties. Russell received a five-place grid drop, promoting Antonelli to the front row alongside Norris. Liam Lawson moved up to third, producing an outstanding result for Racing Bulls, while Charles Leclerc, who had qualified fourth, was handed a ten-place penalty following power-unit changes. Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton will start near the back after their respective power-unit penalties, making Sunday a particularly challenging afternoon for both former champions. Hamilton also endured a mechanical nightmare, with his Ferrari suffering serious problems and requiring further power-unit work.

For Norris, this pole position represents a fantastic opportunity to fight for another victory. He has mastered the rain, beaten the Mercedes drivers and delivered another spectacular lap at a circuit where he has repeatedly excelled. However, Antonelli will start alongside him, and Lawson’s unexpected position on the second row could make the opening corners particularly interesting. With Verstappen and Hamilton facing huge recovery challenges, Sunday promises plenty of drama. Norris has conquered the storm, but the battle for victory in Brazil is only just beginning.
