MotoGP – 2026 Malaysian GP – Race

Marc Márquez delivered a commanding performance at Sepang on Sunday, winning the Malaysian MotoGP race and moving one step closer to securing the 2026 world championship. The Ducati rider crossed the finish line 4.172 seconds ahead of Pedro Acosta, with his younger brother Álex Márquez completing the podium in third. It was Marc’s seventh victory of the season and his first Malaysian victory since 2018, making it an especially memorable return to the top step at Sepang.

Starting from second on the grid, Marc made an excellent launch and immediately overtook pole-sitter Álex on the run towards Turn 1. However, the Gresini rider refused to surrender without a fight and briefly reclaimed the lead under braking at Turn 4. His aggressive move carried him slightly wide, allowing Marc to strike back and retake first position. Behind them, Ai Ogura initially held third before Pedro Acosta and Marco Bezzecchi moved ahead, setting up an intense battle for the remaining podium positions.

While the two Márquez brothers controlled the opening stages, Acosta was steadily closing the gap. The KTM rider repeatedly attacked Álex, but the younger Márquez defended brilliantly, making it extremely difficult for his rival to find a way through. This battle played perfectly into Marc’s hands, allowing the Ducati star to build an advantage of more than a second. Eventually, on lap ten, Acosta finally found an opportunity and completed the overtake, moving into second place and setting his sights on the leader.

Acosta attempted to reduce the gap during the second half of the race, even gaining several tenths on Marc around lap fourteen. However, the championship leader responded immediately, increasing his pace and making it clear that victory was not going to slip away. With the KTM rider unable to maintain the pressure, Marc comfortably controlled the remaining laps and crossed the finish line with a commanding advantage. Acosta secured another fantastic result after his Sprint victory on Saturday, while Álex held on to third despite still struggling with the effects of his shoulder injury.

Further back, Ai Ogura produced an impressive performance to finish fourth, ahead of Enea Bastianini in fifth. Marco Bezzecchi endured a difficult final part of the race after battling with Ogura, eventually dropping to sixth following a late mistake. Luca Marini finished seventh, just ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio, while Brad Binder and Franco Morbidelli completed the top ten. Francesco Bagnaia could only manage thirteenth, adding another disappointing result to his difficult campaign.

The championship implications were enormous. With Jorge Martín absent from the Malaysian weekend while recovering from his wrist injury, Marc extended his advantage to 44 points, reaching 399 points compared with Martín’s 355. Bezzecchi remains third in the standings. With only two rounds remaining, Marc could mathematically secure his eighth premier-class world title as early as next weekend in Qatar if he increases his advantage sufficiently. After another flawless performance at Sepang, the #93 is getting closer to history, and his rivals are running out of opportunities to stop him.
