Pedro Acosta delivered a sensational performance to win Saturday’s Malaysian MotoGP Sprint at Sepang, securing his second Sprint victory of the 2026 season. The KTM rider overcame changing weather conditions and a fierce battle with Marc Márquez to take the chequered flag just 0.578 seconds ahead of the Ducati star. Marco Bezzecchi completed the podium in third, while Márquez’s runner-up finish proved crucial in the championship battle.

The Sprint began with Álex Márquez making the perfect start from pole position, while Ai Ogura immediately launched an aggressive attack through the opening corners. The Japanese rider forced Marc Márquez to lift his Ducati, allowing Acosta to slip through as well. Suddenly, the championship leader found himself down in fourth, while the KTM rider moved into second and began chasing the leader.
The first major twist came on lap three. Álex Márquez, who had looked comfortable at the front, lost control at Turn 14 and crashed out of the lead. Ogura inherited first place, with Acosta moving into second and Marc recovering to third. Meanwhile, dark clouds gathered above Sepang and the first drops of rain began appearing around the circuit. Jack Miller gambled on changing bikes, but his replacement Yamaha was not ready with wet tyres, ruining his afternoon.
As the rain threatened to intensify, the leading group decided to stay on slick tyres, creating an increasingly tense battle. Acosta repeatedly attacked Ogura, who fought back every time the KTM tried to take the lead. With three laps remaining, the Spaniard finally made his move stick, while Marc took advantage of the battle to climb into second. Bezzecchi was also closing rapidly, sensing an opportunity to join the fight for victory.
Ogura refused to surrender without a fight and launched another attack on Márquez, producing a thrilling exchange of overtakes. However, their battle allowed Acosta to open a small but crucial gap. Bezzecchi eventually passed Ogura with just over a lap remaining to secure third place, while the Japanese rider slipped back to fourth. Acosta maintained his advantage through the final corners and crossed the finish line to celebrate another memorable victory.
Behind the leading quartet, Fabio Di Giannantonio finished fifth ahead of Francesco Bagnaia, who recovered well from tenth on the grid. Brad Binder delivered an excellent comeback to seventh after starting fifteenth, while rookie Diogo Moreira secured eighth for Honda. Enea Bastianini completed the top nine, with Johann Zarco taking the final points-paying position. The rain finally arrived heavily as the riders completed their cool-down lap, proving that those who had gambled on wet tyres had made the wrong call.
For Acosta, this was his second Sprint victory of the season and another demonstration of his growing confidence at the front. However, Marc Márquez was arguably the biggest winner in championship terms. With Jorge Martín forced to withdraw from the Malaysian weekend because of persistent wrist pain, Marc’s second-place finish extended his championship advantage to 19 points, reaching 374 points against Martín’s 355. Bezzecchi remains third with 322. Acosta may have taken the glory at Sepang, but Márquez leaves Saturday in an even stronger position to fight for the world title
