Marc Márquez completed a perfect weekend at Motegi on Sunday, taking victory in the Japanese MotoGP race and striking another major blow in the 2026 World Championship fight. After winning Saturday’s Sprint, the Ducati rider once again stood at the top of the podium, this time ahead of Jorge Martín and Marco Bezzecchi. The result gives Márquez maximum points from the Japanese weekend and further intensifies the battle for the title.

Unlike Saturday’s Sprint, Martín made the better start from pole position and managed to keep Márquez behind him through the opening corners. Bezzecchi also made an excellent getaway, moving into third and completing an all-Aprilia/Ducati battle at the front. With tyre management becoming a crucial factor after the problems seen during Saturday’s Sprint, the leading riders were initially cautious rather than immediately committing to an aggressive battle.
Márquez, however, remained firmly focused on Martín. The reigning champion had already demonstrated his pace throughout the weekend, topping warm-up on Sunday morning, and gradually applied pressure to the championship leader. Once he found his opportunity, the Ducati rider moved ahead and began building the advantage that would ultimately carry him to his second victory of the weekend.
Behind the two title contenders, Bezzecchi produced a strong ride to secure third place and another podium for Aprilia. Enea Bastianini finished fourth, followed by Raúl Fernández and home favourite Ai Ogura. Pedro Acosta, fresh from his maiden MotoGP victory in Austria, could only manage seventh this time, while Francesco Bagnaia recovered to eighth.
The biggest story, though, was once again the championship battle. Martín arrived in Japan with a 12-point advantage, but Márquez’s Sprint victory on Saturday had already reduced that margin to seven points. By taking the full 25 points on Sunday while Martín scored 20 for second, Márquez closed the gap even further and leaves Motegi with enormous momentum heading into the final stages of the season.

For Márquez, it was the ideal response to Martín’s pole position and a weekend in which every detail mattered. He won the Sprint, won the main race and now leaves Japan having maximised his points haul while putting serious pressure on the championship leader. With the title fight becoming tighter with every round, Motegi has once again proved to be a decisive weekend for the #93.
