The inaugural race at Madrid’s brand-new Madring circuit produced a dramatic afternoon, but once again Kimi Antonelli emerged as the man to beat. The Mercedes driver overcame a difficult opening stint and a perfectly executed Ferrari strategy to secure his eighth victory of the season, strengthening his grip on the championship after one of the most tactical races of the year.
Lando Norris made a clean getaway from pole position and immediately controlled the opening laps, with Max Verstappen slotting into second and Antonelli holding station behind the leaders. The race, however, took an unexpected turn when Lance Stroll stopped on track with a mechanical problem, triggering a Virtual Safety Car that completely reshuffled the strategic picture. McLaren reacted too late to the neutralisation, costing Norris valuable seconds during his pit stop, while Ferrari and Mercedes took full advantage of the situation.
Charles Leclerc briefly inherited the lead after extending his first stint, and Ferrari appeared to have placed the Monegasque in a perfect position to fight for victory. But with fresher tyres and superior pace, Antonelli steadily reeled him in during the closing stages. Once Leclerc made his mandatory pit stop with only eight laps remaining, the Mercedes driver reclaimed first place and never looked back, managing the final laps with the composure that has become his trademark throughout this remarkable campaign.
Behind the winner, Max Verstappen secured second place after another determined drive, while Norris recovered from McLaren’s costly strategy error to complete the podium. Leclerc ultimately slipped to fourth after leading much of the race, unable to defend against rivals on fresher tyres, while George Russell rounded out the top five to give Mercedes another strong haul of championship points.
The race proved far less enjoyable for the home favourites. Carlos Sainz’s afternoon came to an early end following mechanical problems after starting from the back of the grid, while Fernando Alonso endured a frustrating race and finished near the tail of the field after contact on the opening lap damaged his Aston Martin. Lewis Hamilton also failed to reach the finish, retiring with brake issues in the early stages after showing encouraging pace throughout the weekend.
As the chequered flag fell, Antonelli celebrated yet another landmark victory in what is rapidly becoming a championship-defining season. Winning the first-ever race at Madring added another milestone to the young Italian’s extraordinary campaign, while Mercedes once again demonstrated its ability to execute under pressure. With eight victories already to his name and an ever-growing championship advantage, Antonelli leaves Madrid looking increasingly unstoppable as the season enters its decisive final phase.
