MiniDrivers – 2026 China – Race

The race in Shanghai delivered another dramatic chapter in the early stages of the season, with a new name writing his story at the front of the field. After an impressive weekend that already included a historic pole position, 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli produced a composed and confident performance to secure his first victory at the highest level of single-seater racing. The Italian led a dominant one-two finish for Mercedes ahead of teammate George Russell, while Lewis Hamilton completed the podium after a strong drive for Ferrari.

The start immediately set the tone for the race. Hamilton launched brilliantly and briefly jumped into the lead heading into the opening corners, but Antonelli reacted quickly and reclaimed first place by the second lap. From that moment on, the young Italian began to control the pace, building a small gap while Russell settled into third place and carefully monitored the battle between the Ferrari drivers behind.

The early phase of the race featured its first interruption when Lance Stroll stopped on track, triggering a Safety Car that briefly neutralized the action. Once racing resumed, Antonelli managed the restart perfectly and continued to dictate the rhythm at the front. Behind him, Russell began to close in as the Mercedes pair gradually pulled away from the Ferraris of Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.

Further back, the race produced plenty of drama. The event began with fewer cars than expected after both McLaren drivers were unable to start due to technical issues, while reigning champion Max Verstappen later retired with mechanical problems. Meanwhile, Hamilton and Leclerc fought an intense internal battle for the final podium position, swapping pace throughout the race before the seven-time champion eventually secured third place.

As the race approached its closing stages, Antonelli briefly locked up under braking in a tense moment that threatened to undo his advantage. However, the Italian quickly recovered and maintained control, keeping Russell at a safe distance while managing his tires over the final laps. The calm response under pressure highlighted the maturity of the rookie despite his young age.

When the checkered flag finally waved, Antonelli crossed the line to claim his maiden victory, becoming the second-youngest race winner in the history of the championship. Russell finished second to secure a one-two result for Mercedes, while Hamilton celebrated his first podium with Ferrari in third place. The result confirmed the strong start of the silver team and marked a historic milestone for the young Italian driver.
