F1 – Hungarian GP – Race

Szia MiniFans!

The Formula One circus is in Mogyorod, Hungary this weekend for round 12 of the 2019 FIA F1 World Championship at the Hungaroring. Did you know that the Hungaroring was the fastest circuit ever built? The construction from start to finish took a total of just eight months.

An exciting qualifying session yesterday saw Max Verstappen take pole position from Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton. The question is, can he maintain the lead at the start of the race – we know the Red Bull’s have suffered poor starts recently.

As the race began, Verstappen was allowed to scamper off as the two Mercedes battled for 2nd position, actually making contact too. Lewis Hamilton would win out in that battle. A few corners later, Valtteri Bottas would make contact with Charles Leclerc too which caused front wing damage and resulted in an early pit stop for the Finnish driver – ruining his chances of a good finish today.

Meanwhile, the story of the race would be the intense battle at the front between Hamilton and Verstappen. Lewis looked like he had the pace to pass, but Max was able to hold him off until Lewis needed to back off to cool his brakes. After the pit stops, it seemed like Verstappen had the win in the bag until Mercedes brought Hamilton in for a surprise pit stop, where he changed onto a used set of medium tyres. 22 phenomenal laps on those tyres, along with Verstappen’s high wear rate, allowed the British driver though to take an impressive victory.

So, Lewis Hamilton took home the 25-points for 1st place today ahead of Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel (who overtook team mate Charles Leclerc with just two laps to go). McLaren snuck 5th place for Carlos Sainz ahead of Pierre Gasly who really struggled today. Kimi Raikkonen finished 7th ahead of Valtteri Bottas in 8th. Both McLaren’s scored points this weekend with Lando Norris 9th, whereas Alexander Albon took the final points-paying position for Toro Rosso.

Another fabulous F1 race today. The series is really on a roll at the moment. Did you enjoy that? How would you rate the race out of ten? Let us know in the comments below.
