The lights went out, and into Turn 1, Verstappen pulled to the inside alongside Vettel who tried to force Verstappen out wide at the exit of the first turn but collided with the Dutchman. This contact changed Vettel’s line through the first three corners, Hamilton tried to go to the outside of Vettel at T3 but Vettel clipped the Mercedes’ right rear tyre. Resulting in a Hamilton puncture and front wing damage for Vettel. Both cars pitted at the end of lap 1.

Whilst his teammate was leading, Ricciardo pulled into the pits with an MGU-H issue on his new engine to retire from the race.

Lap 13, Massa and Vettel come together at turn 4, Vettel complains on the radio after passing Massa at the following corner, taking P15, Romain Grosjean received a 5 second penalty after exceeding track limits while battling with Fernando Alonso.

Hamilton got stuck behind Sainz and Wehrlein for about 12 laps, before finally passing them. Verstappen and Bottas also lap the Brit early on.

Nico Hulkenberg retires after his car is deemed “not safe” by his team after his car was “live” and he had to jump off the nose of the car.

On lap 33, another Renault powered car retired, as Brendon Hartley pulled over with a blown engine while he was running in 11th place. Hartley’s retirement brought out a Virtual Safety Car, which helped many drivers but hindered Sergio Perez at his home race as he lost two positions to Ocon and Stroll.

Vettel made his way up to 4th place by passing Stroll and Ocon, while Hamilton had a very clean, fair battle with Alonso, making a move around the outside of Turn 5 to take P9 from the Spaniard.

Max Verstappen won the 2017 Mexican Grand Prix with Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen completing the podium, Vettel finished in 4th. Lewis Hamilton received two points by finishing 9th, but he won his fourth World Drivers Championship with two races to spare.
