ABB Formula E – 2019 Ad Diriyah E-Prix R1
The ABB Formula E season started in Saudi with the Ad Diriyah E-Prix. It’s not usual to see a race held on Friday at the ABB Formula E, but this time is an exception. Tomorrow we will have another race, but for now, we have to focus on what happened at the first round of the championship.
Alexander Sims stared on pole, followed by both Mercedes. The positions on the top 10 didn’t change so much during the first minutes of the race, but things started to change with Sam Bird who was following Edoardo Mortara, fighting for the top positions. This time attack mode changed their place for this race, and was on a really dirty part of the track, making the drivers to lose 1,5 seconds every time they tried to take the Attack Mode, making in this case with Bird, that the British driver lost the position against Jerome D’Ambrosio, but he could overtake D’Ambrosio and Mortara.
The last champion, Jean Eric Vergne, had to retire with problems on his car, while Sam Bird was overtaking more drivers. In this case, it was time for De Vries, reaching the podum, and doing the same with the other top drivers, reaching the first position and keeping it until the end of the race.
On the other hand, safety car made his debut this season when Daniel Abt crashed into the wall when he was followed by Antonio Felix Da Costa. Just when the race was re-started, we saw so many fights, specially for the top 5 and for the podium.
Sam Bird claimed the first victory of the season ahead of Andre Lotterer and Stoffel Vandoorne. The top 10 was completed with Oliver Rowland, Robin Frijns, Nyck de Vries, Edoardo Mortara, Alexander Sims, Jerome D’Ambrosio and Mitch Evans.
Great debut for Porsche and Mercedes, but we will see if they continue improving during the next race tomorrow. Sam Bird won’t let them win so easily so, stay tuned, because more action will come tomorrow with the 2nd race in Ad Diriyah.
