F1 – German GP – Qualifying
The Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg circuit (to give it its full title) hosts the Formula One action this weekend; as the latter half of the season begins.
Ferrari were quickest in all three practice sessions, and appeared to have a surprise advantage over Mercedes this weekend. Would that be how it played out in qualifying though?
The fine practice form Ferrari showed became irrelevant during Q1 for Sebastian Vettel as the German’s car suffered a partial loss of power on his out lap. He did manage to drive back to the pits, and despite the frantic work of his mechanics, the problem was not solvable in the remaining time; it turned out to be a turbo issue. Vettel will now start tomorrow’s race from 20th position. Also eliminated in Q1 were the three rookies (Lando Norris, Alexander Albon and George Russell – 16th, 17th and 18th), along with Robert Kubica in 19th.
In Q2, five different teams had cars eliminated with Antonio Giovinazzi 11th, Kevin Magnussen 12th, Daniel Ricciardo 13th, Daniil Kvyat 14th and Lance Stroll 15th. The session was ultra close with the drivers from 8th to 13th all separated by a total of just 0.033s.
In the final qualifying session, Ferrari would suffer another mechanical issue – this time related to the fuel system – which meant Charles Leclerc was unable to take to the circuit. The Monegasque driver will now start 10th tomorrow, despite looking the fastest all weekend.
Elsewhere, Nico Hulkenberg qualified 9th for Renault, just behind his former team mate, Sergio Perez. Carlos Sainz took 7th for McLaren behind Romain Grosjean’s Haas in 6th. Neither of them could match Kimi Raikkonen who claimed “best of the rest” in 5th. Pierre Gasly took 4th for Red Bull, Valtteri Bottas was 3rd and Max Verstappen finished 2nd which allowed Lewis Hamilton to take pole position, by 0.346s.
Ferrari do appear to have the quickest car this weekend, do you think they could threaten Lewis Hamilton for the win from 10th & 20th on the grid? If not, which driver do you see as Lewis’ biggest threat tomorrow?
Bring on the rain, that’s what I say!
