F1 – Azerbaijan GP – Qualifying
Baku is back this season, and earlier as we saw last season. The qualifying session has just ended and now we know which will be the grid for tomorrow’s race.
During the first session we saw how Romain Grosjean caused a yellow flag when he blocked the front tire, but a few seconds later, we saw the french driver retiring with problems on his Haas. Sergio Perez was coming fast but he made the same mistake as Grosjean, returning to the track a bit later. Gasly who was on risk had problems and run out of the track after almost hitting his teammate (again). Chequered flag and we had at the knockout zone Vandoorne, Gasly, Ericsson, Hartley and Grosjean.
Second qualifying session and we had different strategies with some top teams who are trying their lap with super soft compound while the other drivers are using ultra soft. Raikkonen and Stroll made a mistake, running out of the track but both drivers returning without problems. Raikkonen had problems again and caused another yellow flag, and again he could return to the track, the major problem for the Ferrari driver was that he was at the knockout zone and he lost time with that mistake and when he tried to return to the track, he had to do some FIA checkings. Chequered flag and Raikkonen finished on top after Q2, at the knockout zone we had Stroll, Sirotkin, Alonso, Leclerc and Magnussen.
Final session and it’s time for the battle for the top 10. We must remember that Nico Hulkenberg will have a 5 position grid penalty for tomorrow’s race for changing his gearbox. After their first attempt Vettel was on provisional pole with 3 tenths of advantage against Hamilton and Bottas.
Once the drivers made their final changes on their car, they tried their last lap. Hamilton was coming really fast with purple sector, but he lost time at the second and third sector, being impossible for him to improve Vettel’s time.
Vettel will start the Azerbaijan Grand Prix tomorrow on pole position with Hamilton 2nd and Bottas 3rd. The top was completed with Ricciardo, Verstappen, Raikkonen, Ocon, Pérez, Hulkenberg (who will held a 5 position grid penalty) and Sainz.
The german driver will try to increase his advantage tomorrow after having a bad race at China. The MiniDrivers will be ready to explain what will happen at Baku so stay tuned for the updates.
