Vettel started from pole position next to Raikkonen. Bottas started in third position next to Ricciardo. Hamilton got away as ninth due to a five-place grid penalty which he recieved after changing his gearbox. Verstappen started from the fifteenth position due to a crash in the first part of the qualification on Saturday.
We had an eventful start with an accident in turn one which involved Magnussen and Hulkenberg. Also Perez spun after that Harley touched him. Verstappen and Hamilton, soon went over to catching up. Though, in the second lap we had a collision between the Silberpfeil and the Red Bull driver. Verstappen didn’t give Hamilton enough room coming out of a turn. The Dutchman ended up with a punctuated rear left tyre, but was able to resume his race after a pitstop. Ricciardo had to end his race in the same lap due to an electronical problem.
Hamilton overtook three drivers in one movement during the fifth lap, while Verstappen had too much damage on his differential to stay his race. He ended up on the side of the track. That means that both Red Bulls were out of the race after only five laps were completed. Hartley recieved a ten-second penalty in lap nine after his collision with Perez. Hamilton, who drove fourth, started close the gap to Raikkonen in lap twelve. Vettel was still leading the race with Bottas in second.
From the fourteenth lap on, we started so see some pitstops. The drivers mainly put on Softs or Mediums. The ones with the Medium compound went for the one-stop strategy. Alonso overtook Sirotkin with a beautiful move in lap eighteen. The top three stayed untouched till the pitstop of Vettel. He entered the pitlane as first and came out as fourth with new Soft tyres. Due to Vettel’s pitstop, Bottas became the leader with Raikkonen second and Hamilton third. Hamilton later overtook Raikkonen and led after Bottas went in for Medium tyres.
Vettel started catching up on Hamilton in lap 25 and later took the lead in lap 26 with the help of DRS. Hamilton tried an undercut on Vettel by pitting in the same lap. He came out of the pits in fourth position with Medium tyres. Raikkonen had another pitstop in lap 36. His rear left tyre wasn’t coming off, while light turned green. A mechanic was still standing in front of that tyre when the Fin drove away and hit his leg. We heared after the race that the mechanic broke his leg during the incident. Raikkonen had to stop his race in the pit lane itself due to the old tyre that stayed on. After this incident, we had Vettel in the lead followed by Bottas and Hamilton. They had a gap to Gasly of around a minute at the end of the race.
With fifteen laps to go, we still had a lot of overtaking action in the midfield. Gasly was one of the impressing drivers of the race who drove for the biggest part of the Grand Prix in fourth position and even finished in that same position. That way he took twelve points home for Toro Rosso and became the driver of the day. Ericsson also had a wonderful race. He ended in ninth position and collected two points for Sauber.
Vettel won the Bahrain GP of 2018 with Bottas in second and Hamilton completing the podium. Our driver of the day, Gasly, was fourth followed by Magnussen and Hulkenberg. The two McLarens finished in seventh and eighth position with Ericsson and Ocon as ninth and tenth. Ferrari had the fastest pit stop. They changed Vettel’s tyres in 2.24 seconds. The fastest lap was driven by Bottas. It took him 1 minute and 33.740 seconds to complete a lap in Sakhir.
The teams are ready to pack their stuff for the Chinese GP that is held next week. We are back then on Saturday for the qualifying session.
