During the first session Bottas and Hamilton were leading the first qualifying session of the year, that went without problems. Both Sauber, Toro Rosso and Stroll were the drivers who were at risk at the knockout zone during the first minutes. Chequered flag and Bottas finished the session as the fastest driver with Grosjean, Gasly, Wehrlein, Ericsson and Hartley at the knockout zone.

Second round of qualifying and Lewis Hamilton made an awesome lap time on his first attempt. After the first minutes, Vandoorne, Massa, Magnussen, Sainz and Stroll were at the knockout zone. Chequered flag and without problems the drivers completed their last lap at Abu Dhabi, Hamilton finished on top with Alonso, Sainz, Vandoorne, Magnussen and Stroll at the knockout zone. Last fight for the pole position and again both Mercedes made an awesome lap, being more than half of a second faster than both Ferrari drivers. Verstappen was the first of the mortals after both cars wih Ricciardo, Hulkenberg, Ocon, Perez and Massa closing the qualifying on their first lap.

After their moment at boxes, the cars went again to the track trying to beat Valtteri’s time who was on provisional pole. It was clear that the pole was for Mercedes but the question was if it was for Bottas or Hamilton. The British driver tried to improve the time, but it wasn’t enough for him.
