F1 – Mexican GP – Qualifying
We’re heading into the final rounds of the season and we reach the race with more life of the championship, the Mexico Grand Prix at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
First round of qualifying and the Ferrari were the first on reaching the first positions of the group with Hartley on third position with 2 seconds of difference with Sebastian Vettel who was on provisional pole, but the Mercedes arrived with their silver arrows and took again the first positions with both drivers, being Hamilton 0.5 seconds faster than Vettel. Verstappen also improved the time of the german driver and was only 1 tenth behind Hamilton while Vettel improved his time with super soft compound. Both Ferrari, Red Bull and Vandoorne made their laps with super soft compound. Ericsson, Wehrlein, Magnussen, Grosjean and Gasly (who didn’t start qualifying due an engine failure during the FP3) were at the knockout zone with Hamilton on top.
Second round of qualifying and things are getting now serious. Hamilton had a really bad first lap with 9 seconds of difference with Sebastian Vettel who was on provisional pole, but on his second lap Hamilton made a new track record but was really close to Vettel’s time. Hartley had problems saying that he has no power on his Red Bull. Verstappen destroyed the time with 5 tenths of advantage against Hamilton. Verstappen finished the session on top and we had at the knockout zone Massa, Stroll, Hartley, Alonso and Vandoorne.
Third qualifying session and on the first try Vettel was faster than Hamilton, but only one tenth, with Ocon 3rd and Sainz 4th. Verstappen improved Vettel’s time with 3 tenths of advantage. Only Bottas was one of the top drivers who didn’t make a lap during the first half of Q3.
Hamilton made a mistake on his final lap and couldn’t improve the time. Vettel also was coming really fast and improved Verstappen’s time and took the pole position.
Sebastian Vettel finished the qualifying with pole position with Max Verstappen 2nd and Lewis Hamilton 3rd. The top 10 was completed with Bottas, Raikkonen, Ocon, Ricciardo, Hulkenberg, Sainz and Perez.
Tomorrow the championship can be decided only if Lewis finishes on top 5, even with a victory of Sebastian Vettel, so the Mercedes team is ready to celebrate the second title, but this is F1 and everything can happen. Stay tuned to know what will happen.
