F1 – Austrian GP – Qualifying

The Red Bull Ring could be the shortest track of the season, but it gives always special moments for the fans. The qualifying session has just finished and we’re ready for the race tomorrow, but for now, let’s explain the exciting qualifying session for the Austrian Grand Prix.

The Haas F1 Team were the first to try to make their first lap at the Red Bull Ring, showing a big improvement for this race, being really fast and finishing at the top, but being fast could mean sometimes make some mistakes, with Grosjean going out of the track and Magnussen breaking his suspension after passing through the kerbs. Ferrari and Bottas were the only who tried their lap with super soft tyres, but Hamilton was the fastest with the provisional pole. McLaren had a new upgrade on their engines but even with that, they were having some problems with Vandoorne at the knockout zone, but could improve reaching the 15th position. With the chequered flag Hamilton finished on top with Palmer, Massa, Stroll, Ericsson and Wehrlein, being Williams the major suprise of the session.

For the second round of qualifying things changed and it was now Hamilton who used the super soft while everyone was using the ultra soft tire. Bottas was on top but Lewis was really close with only 2 tenths of ddistance and both Ferrari behind him. Magnussen, who broke the suspension during Q1 wouldn’t make the Q2, so we had the first driver who won’t be at the top 10. Final seconds of the session and everyone was really close so, any mistake would mean being out. Bottas finished the session on top and we had at the knockout zone Hulkenberg, Alonso, Vandoorne, Kvyat and Magnussen.

Final round, time to get serious. Lewis Hamilton will have a 5 position grid penalty for changing his gearbox, so the pole wouldn’t be for him tomorrow. Bottas on his 1st attempt was the fastest man on track with Vettel in less than a tenth to him and Hamilton 3rd. and Kimi 4th. Ricciardo closed the top 5. After the last changes on their cars, it was time to become the fastest man on track and as we said before, any mistake would mean being out of the top positions.

Before reaching the chequered flag Romain Grosjean stopped his Haas on the track, deciding the times for the qualifying, and also Verstappen spun and ran out of the track.

Valtteri Bottas achieved the pole position with Sebastian Vettel 2nd and Lewis Hamilton 3rd, but he will have a 5 position grid penalty so, he will start the race 8th. The top 10 was completed with Raikkonen, Ricciardo, Verstappen, Grosjean, Perez, Ocon and Sainz.

Tomorrow the next fight for the championship will be at the home of Red Bull but the one who won here during the last year was Mercedes. Will they continue winning or it will be the red cars? We will know who will win in 24h.
